Toyota 4Runner
Review
Do not call it a comeback--that the 4Runner's been here for ages. And you would know it to look at the item, with its own searchable, last-decade styling; its large, naturally aspirated V-6; and a transmission using a very low variety of gears (five). The 4Runner is really numb and drifting on paved surfaces which it is most effective for motorists who spend a lot of their time away from the beaten path.
Great thing, then, that it's constructed for off-roading. Buyers so inclined will probably be thankful of its plastic-laden inside, since it will be easy to wash when sand necessarily makes its way indoors. Though missing lots of modern creature comforts and the most recent comprehensive driver-assistance technology that is standard in a lot of other Toyotas, the 4Runner is outfitted for rock climbing and dirt-track cruising just like nothing else this side of a Jeep Wrangler.
Highs: Off-road art, old-school appeal, spacious cargo hold.
Lows: Aging powertrain, plastic inside, does not glow on-road.
Verdict: Dated and falling behind its competitors in many metrics, nearly extinct, nevertheless shines off-road.
What is New for 2019?
Toyota presents the Nightshade unique variant festooned with black-colored brakes and trim. The hardcore 4Runner TRD Pro version profits an all-new suspension using Fox internal-bypass shocks. Meanwhile, the outside of a couple of equipment shuffles one of the trim levels, the 4Runner stays the same because it had been for 2018.
Restricted: $44,270
TRD Guru: $47,460
Selecting among these 4Runner's off-road-oriented trims is a no-brainer, since it falls short of the competition at virtually any metric. We would pick the mid-level TRD Off-Road Premium ($41,040, a measure up over the TRD Off-Road trimming ) for the very best combination of off-road design and creature comforts. Standard features include high profile four-wheel driveway, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, plus a locking rear differential with creep style. Other noteworthy options include a sliding rear cargo deck, a power sunroof, and operating boards, all which may be bundled in a variety of configurations.
Likes: Old-school body-on-frame structure means burly off-road capacity.
The 4Runner's 4.0-liter V-6 motor and five-speed automated transmission may team with rear-, four-, or all-wheel drive. Entry-level SR5 models are rear-wheel drive, while the rest of the trims except the tippity-top Restricted model include selectable, part time four-wheel drive. Those versions have a selectable two-speed transfer case using a low-range setting. Restricted models have fulltime all-wheel drive using a Torsen centre differential that could apportion torque to front or back brakes as necessary, based on road conditions and then wheels have traction.
Aged although the Toyota feels in actions, its functionality is appropriate in the mix with its modern rivals, such as the V-6 Dodge Durango and turbocharged Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. Along with the Toyota's rocky framework and torque-rich engine give it a leg up in towing; its own 5000-pound capacity defeats the above Santa Fe Sport, in addition to the Ford Edge and Jeep Wrangler, while still falling short of their stronger Dodge Durango's 7400-pound limitation.
The 4Runner's powertrain mixtures reveal their age in the pump. Other competitors have comparable city evaluations but do far better on the street, along with the 4Runner failed to fulfill its own meager 20-mpg EPA ratings throughout our street evaluation, notching rather an even weaker 19 mpg. That puts the Toyota in the back of the mid century SUV class together with the likewise off-road-focused Jeep Wrangler.
Likes: Simple infotainment, roomy cargo hold, accessible third-row seat.
Dislikes: Interior materials are shabby, higher freight floor liftover, demands more USB ports.
The 4Runner's inside isn't what you would call state-of-the-art, using switchgear that might have come in the latter years of the past millennium. Lackluster substances and styling aside, the 4Runner handles to comfortably fit people front and back regardless of its own back-of-the-class inside dimensions. We have not analyzed the optional third row, but we guess that, as with almost any third row in the current market, it is ideal for kids.
Entune, Toyota's touchscreen infotainment program, is standard at the 4Runner. It is an easy, intuitive setup that reacts quickly to consumer inputs but for 2019 it lacks Android Vehicle or Apple CarPlay integration. A smattering of electricity points across the cottage will keep everybody plugged in, but we would happily trade a number of those 12-volt sockets for over USB ports.
A adjustable cargo hold and many big, deep cubbies at the front row imply that the 4Runner is as versatile a hauler since it's a rock-crawler. Just do not attempt to heave anything to the cargo unless you've got a chiropractor on telephone --the ground of the cargo hold is uncomfortably high off the floor. The two-row 4Runner we analyzed had an optional pull-out freight deck built to make loading and unloading heavy things --around 440 lbs --a bit easier. In addition, it can double as a tailgate for seats. This gives a level load floor once the second-row chairs are folded, but also robs the cargo hold of many inches of elevation. Nevertheless, we match an impressive 14 carry-ons supporting the next row.
Security and Driver-Assistance Characteristics
The 4Runner conducted tolerably well in its own crash tests, using a perfectly commendable four-star evaluation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), however, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) handed out several demerits, such as a bad rating for the 4Runner's headlights and Marginal scores to its little overlap evaluation and child-seat LATCH system. IIHS also mentioned that the 4Runner's LATCH anchors were mounted too heavy in the chair for simple installation. Unlike newer opponents, the Toyota offers nearly no driver-assistance technologies such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, or blind-spot tracking.

Guarantee and Maintenance Coverage
Toyota supplies two decades of free scheduled maintenance, a rarity in this class. The policy in different classes is not as striking but matches business norms.
Limited warranty covers 3 Decades or 36,000 miles
Powertrain warranty covers 5 Decades or 60,000 miles
Free care is covered for two Decades or 25,000 miles
Important redesigns happen every five decades or so; not much changes between. Dividing them into productions provides additional meaningful distinctions in the purchasing procedure.
